north eastern jewish centre
NEJC is the main Jewish social, cultural and spiritual Centre servicing Jews in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Although comprising of a small but active membership of approx.150 families, there is a catchment number of approx. 4000 Jews in the area who do not attend, and may not even be aware of the Centre and its many and varied activities.
The Centre is keen to attract those Jews and especially younger people, but the amenities are almost 50 years old, and the appearance of the Centre can be off-putting to some people and families. In addition, the Centre is mainly run by older conservative members, especially the synagogue, which can be just as off-putting. One of the concerns is without an influx of more and younger people, the Centre might become irrelevant in approximately 10 years.
To address this the board of the NEJC are keen to refurbish the main hall and the small hall to try to engage new members Since Centre funds are finite the fund raiser will assist enormously to pay for the renovations.
